BlogHer13 – Worth it? Thoughts?

So the hot question I keep getting asked by other bloggers is if I plan on going to BlogHer13 – a big blogger conference for women in Chicago.  The answer – I’m not sure. I’d love a chance to network with other bloggers.  I’d love to take some workshops to figure out things about blogging that baffle a poor simple writer’s mind – like SEO, marketing, keywords, and a plethora of other things that make me break out in hives just thinking about.

However, the last thing I want is to go to a tradeshow-like place where vendors are asking me to represent them.  I don’t write sponsored posts, I don’t do product reviews, and I only take advertisers for my sidebar advertising, not as a brand representative.  That’s not what my blog is all about.  I have no problem with those who do, it’s a great way to make a living, it’s just not my way.

I write because my goal is to make people laugh, think, cry, snort, or sometimes all of those at the same time. I want my blog to move people in one way or another.  I think humor is one of the best ways to unite – and it’s a great forum to share my parenting-gone-wrong stories and some of the insanity of our lives as grown-ups who still feel like children. My goal for future of the blog is simple – I’d love for more people to enjoy it and relate to it, or at least get a chuckle at it.

So help me make my decision.  What do you think? Have you been before? What have you gotten out of it? Why did YOU go/or why are YOU going? Please share the good, the bad, and the ugly.

  1. I have gone twice and there will be little asks from brands for you do much other check out their products and that can be avooded completely by staying away from the expo hall which is plenty easy to do. Blogher is all about what you make it.

    Go. No regrets!

  3. I would really like to go! I can’t afford the ticket, but I’ll be in the Chicago area visiting my parents that week anyway, so I applied to be a volunteer. If you go, I hope to meet you there!

  4. You should go because I’m going and we are Bloppy Bloggers!!!!! We can also meet in person, in a non-creepy way, of course. :)

  5. Go! I have never been there, but I would jump at a chance to go to Chicago!

  6. I went last year and I already have my tix for this year’s BlogHer in Chicago. I’m not much for writing sponsored posts either. You can pretty much ignore the vendors if you want and focus on networking and going to panels. There are a ton of people there and parties and the whole nine yards. It’s easy to get overwhelmed. I found it helped to have a plan as to what you would participate in before you get there.

  7. Come! This is my first time, and it feels like it’s summer break before the first year of high school. I do write sponsored posts and product reviews (which are not paid, btw) but I’m not there looking for free stuff. I went to a Canadian blogger conference last year and found the networking invaluable. It’s so nice to meet people you’ve been tweeting with, and to be able to share experiences and get advice from those who’ve been at it a lot longer. If you decide to go, would love to meet you in person! Tweet @MommyGearest when you have time for a hello. :)
